a washing away a face
This is what happens to the heads that don't make it into the kiln.I reclaim the clay but start by washing off their paint - well, washing them away entirely because they are the paint. I like this process, some good effects occur, the dry clay comes back to life and as the layers of paint dissolve interesting edges, patterns and textures turn up. It seems to take a a while to get rid of the eyes. It's a very particular sensation - cradling a face in running water and making it disappear.

*****Very exciting day today ****Clive came to fit my new first ever kiln! Here it is in its new home, test firing tomorrow - bit nervous till that's out of the way and all is ok - but so pleased to finally have my very own kiln.

peopled out

Here's one of the images from my book - feeling a bit peopled out at the mo after 2 very hectic weeks - so this picture seemed appropriate today! I always enjoy doing portraits where I can play around with my heads and use them in place of my face.
The weather is beautiful here and our resident pigeon is on the bird table looking down at the cats. Watched 'The Lives of Others' on Saturday and it's still with me, most amazing film...
Hello to everybody new who has found me this week and thanks to Elisabeth for her good words about me in her unexpected guest interview at sfgirlbybay.

Glad to wear glasses
I spent Sunday afternoon and evening titleing the remaining few pieces of work for CAL. 3 days to go......Some heads I have titles for before I start. Some I know what they feel like to me but don't have the words so have to hunt them down. Some I don't even know who or what they are and I spend hours trying to tease some information out of them to get me thinking about a title. It's one of my favourite parts of the process but it takes time. I always stumble across other interesting word formations, quotes or ideas - so it feels like as I'm finishing off this body of work I am simultaneously starting another. These five will be coming to London with me.
